The Social Stratification of Cultural Consumption: Some Policy Implications of a Research Project∗

چکیده
This paper describes a research project that we have recently completed on the social stratification of cultural consumption, and then aims to present our main findings and to bring out their implications for certain aspects of public policy in relation to the arts. Our research is relevant in particular to policy issues that arise in regard to access to, and participation in, cultural activities and to the extent and causation of social inequalities in cultural consumption. Until quite recently, there has been a serious lack of information on cultural consumption in Britain that (i) derives from well-designed samples of the national population; (ii) covers most major cultural domains; and (iii) allows individuals’ levels and patterns of cultural consumption to be linked to a wide range of their socio-demographic characteristics. The research project on which this volume reports was conceived with two main aims in mind. The first and most immediate aim was to extend our knowledge of the social stratification of cultural consumption, and to do so in a cross-national perspective. In this regard, we obviously looked to build on previous research in this area, which has in fact been steadily growing in volume over recent de...
متن کاملSocial Stratification of Cultural Consumption Across Three Domains: Music, Theatre, Dance and Cinema, and the Visual Arts∗
In chapter 1 of this volume, we have outlined three widely discussed arguments concerning the social stratification of cultural consumption: that is, what we have labelled as the ‘homology’, the ‘individualisation’ and the ‘omnivore–univore’ arguments. In our own previous work (Chan and Goldthorpe, 2005, 2007b,c) we have examined the validity of these arguments in the light of analyses of cultu...

In current sociological literature the relationship between social inequality and patterns of cultural taste and consumption is the subject of a large and complex debate. In this paper the primary aim is to examine, in the light of empirical results from a research project in which the authors are presently engaged, three main, and rival, positions that have been taken up in this debate, here l...
متن کاملWhere Do Cultural Omnivores Come From? The Implications of Educational Mobility For Cultural Consumption
We use data from a large-scale and nationally representative survey from the UK to investigate the association between social mobility and cultural omnivorousness. By applying diagonal reference models to our data, we show that both parents’ and respondent’s educational level affect visual arts consumption, with the weight of the former being about a third in magnitude as the latter. This is in...

Objective: The purpose of this study is to identify and extract the implications of critical realism for science, technology and innovation policy-making as one of the later research traditions in social sciences.
